Liberty Hall hosted a second highly successful Open House on July 29. It celebrated the launch of the Maine Civic Halls Initiative, a collaborative endeavor between the Friends of Liberty Hall, Pembroke-based Greenhorns, and Maine Preservation. The Open House was an opportunity to share the findings of a preliminary survey carried out by Nadine Biss on the current state of civic buildings in Hancock and Washington County, and to think together -- in one such building, Liberty Hall -- how communities can bring new life to these historic structures.
The discussion between Crystal Hitchings of the Sunrise County Economic Council, Tara Kelly from Maine Preservation, Mollie Cashwell from the Cultural Alliance of Maine, and Martha Piscuckas, of Maine Arts Commission and formerly of Waterfall Arts served as a starting point for a broader conversation with the audience. What the challenges and possibilities of harnessing historic preservation to contemporary community needs?
Artist, Michelle Hauser, installed a pop-up photographic exhibition in the building, featuring work from her series Meeting Hall Maine. It celebrates the contribution made by grange halls since the late nineteenth century to the building of community in Maine.
The 2023 Open House concluded with a lively musical program from Cambridge based Lenny’s Funk Band.
We were delighted to welcome over a hundred visitors to Liberty Hall!
